If You ever wondered about this, there is a great article at informIT about that. In 2010 David Chisnall wrote What Is Mac OS X? article that describes into detail what Mac OS X is and what it does not.
That short quote from that article sums it up: "It's almost as much of a mistake to say that OS X is not FreeBSD as it is to say that it is FreeBSD."
